Asra Rahman, Program Director, invited Gary Aiken to speak at both Friday Muslim American Society services.
Before he spoke, Gary greeted many from the community. He was assisted by supporter, Sonia Syed Rehman, who introduced Gary to the people coming in.
One young man was a new citizen who was eager to vote on November 5 for the first time.
One gentleman was a builder who pledged support.
Salah Ahmed, a community member, announced Gary and encouraged the people to be aware of the importance of the upcoming election.
What are the concerns expressed by this conservative Muslim community?
Affordable housing, better infrastructure, income disparity regarding schools; i.e., some schools are strong and thriving versus schools that are struggling.
There is a need for more thriving small businesses and more support for families with special needs children; for example, more job opportunities, more support for those who are autistic or who have physical disabilities. There is a need to hire more sign language interpreters in the schools. There is a need for more walkable safe areas in parks.
Gary recognized the growing Muslim community and promised representation on district committees. He emphasized that after 24 years of the current incumbent’s reign there has been little progress in Mason District. He offered himself as a leader for change—it’s time—Mason District deserves a leader who will get things done.
It was a welcome declaration, and Gary asked for their vote on November 5, or earlier since early voting has already begun. For more information, go to www.garyaiken.org – and VOTE NOVEMBER 5.
